In order to keep Matanzas chess active in the midst of the epidemiological situation in the country, the commission in charge of the so-called science game in the territory designed a series of strategies that will allow the training of young chess to continue in the new scenario.
The programming of virtual games between the athletes and Grand Masters (GM) of this sport is one of the most attractive options among those programmed in the training period from home, since it allows making plays with high-ranking figures.
The success of these experiences was confirmed during this week when GM Reinaldo Vera developed a simultaneous on the lichest online platform with twelve students from the under-15 category. With these same characteristics, GM Yuri González, from Havana, competed with around 20 under-17 players, as detailed by the provincial chess commissioner, Michel Iglesias, who also referred to the value of exchanges for the growth of promising youngsters.
“They are athletes on the rise whose level makes it very difficult for them to compete with Grandmasters and this alternative allows them to prepare with the best, even if they are defeated. In reality, everyone wins because the higher-level chess players feel useful collaborating and it is something they enjoy.
We must exploit the knowledge and experiences of our sporting glories ”. Iglesias says he sees in these games a means of maintaining preparation for the fundamental commitments: the School and Youth Games, which, if the health situation in the country allows, will take place in the summer of 2021.
During the stage of confinement at home, young chess players are advised by their coaches in order to correct mistakes and make this stage a productive moment, in one of the sports that has seen the space to stay active on digital platforms.
