Cuba to Americup windows, between doubts and certainties.

Tamara Caridad Mesa González 20 enero, 2021

The scourge of Covid-19 on humanity has made the world sports scene unpredictable, marked by constant uncertainty in recent months, which today hangs over Cuban basketball since the measure of not holding events abroad during the first quarter of the year.

While the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) proposes a 2021 calendar at the top of competitive commitments, the most immediate the last window of the Americup, the contagious virus continues to cause deaths and has dragged the governing commission of the sport of baskets in the Island towards the crossroads: signing up for qualifying events or keeping athletes safe at home.

Undoubtedly, ensuring the integrity of Antillean athletes constitutes a priority for the National Institute of Sport, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), especially when coexistence with the Sars-CoV-2 is not easy, because even in Cuba where the disease has not attacked with such lethality, forced to cancel and / or postpone competitive contests again. The national commissioner for basketball, Dalia Henry revealed that they value participation in these events according to INDER’s indications and study the scenario to determine which path to choose.

Among the many variables to be analyzed beyond the approval of the departure of the men’s team to compete abroad in the midst of the current situation, they will surely have to coordinate other actions demanded by the epidemiological panorama such as the transfer of athletes and a place to carry out a training base taking into account that today the athletes are at home.

The next window of the Americup will take place in Puerto Rico in February under the bubble format applied in various sports leagues around the world, with great effectiveness, since it allows the control of medical protocols, a fact that guarantees the health of athletes. Located in group C, the Antilleans will play one last game against the Canadian team, absent from the Punta Cana event last November, with the purpose of surpassing the numbers of their exit against the Quisqueyano team 96-60.

Precisely the Dominican Republic leads the group after crushing in the final quarter after a fairly even first half to the Cuban team 32 to 5. The continental qualifier offers tickets to the Americup 2022 and after this phase only the first three teams in each bracket go to the next round.

The teams of Brazil and the United States have already guaranteed their participation in an appointment that also grants seven places for the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile 2023. Taking into account the importance of the event, the sports authorities in Cuba will have to examine which route would be more appropriate to follow, an extremely difficult task considering the cards at stake.
