The Day for the Cuban Press Day, with the slogan «Public Press,» the people’s press, began in homage to Juan Gualberto Gómez, who describes himself as one of the patriots and journalists most consistent with Cuban independence principles.
As historians point out, the greatness of this Matanzas’ life and work lies in his capacity to perform successfully and outstandingly in different areas of the public and political sphere, inside and outside Cuba, throughout his existence.
Journalists feel committed to his figure, so close to José Martí, who said of his brother in thought and action: «He wants Cuba with that love of life and death, that heroic spark with which he has to love these days who really loves her. »
He was protagonist in the coordination of the resumption in 1895 of the independence struggles in Cuba and iron opponent to the “dedication” of the mediatized governments during the pseudo-republic.
«Few men have left me with such a genuine and yet simple impression of procerity,» said the great writer Jorge Mañach. And the poet Nicolás Guillén pointed out of him: «Who but Juan Gualberto defended with greater courage, with more courageous Martian inspiration, the rights of Cuba against the slap that meant the Platt Amendment?”
Pay tribute in this day for the Day of the Cuban Press, which will last until the next day 15, is a well-deserved tribute to this Cuban, whose pen was at the service of the great causes of the people and serves as a paradigm to the new generations of journalists that throughout the island work to bring the truth of the Revolution to all media scenarios.
